What's happening, in plain languageΤι Συμβαίνει, Απλά
Achaia is getting a new waste plant at Floka. It cost about €94 million including its first six years of running, it opens in 2027, and it will handle what households and businesses put out from then on. That part is already sorted, and Carbotura has nothing to do with it. The question this document is about is different: what happens to everything that has already been buried at the Xerolakka site outside Patras over the past two decades.

Your collection is already sortedΗ αποκομιδή σας έχει ήδη λυθεί
The new plant at Floka handles day-to-day waste from 2027. Nothing about your bins or collection days changes because of anything in this document.

Closing is not the same as cleaningΤο κλείσιμο δεν είναι καθαρισμός
When Xerolakka shuts, the waste already in the ground stays in the ground. The site gets covered and monitored — gas, water run-off, testing — but the material itself is still there, and that care carries on indefinitely.

Your region gets paid, not billedΗ περιοχή σας πληρώνεται, δεν χρεώνεται
Carbotura would pay for the excavation, the plant, and the clean-up — and pay your regional authority €50 for every tonne taken out and turned into product. Your region contributes nothing.

How the payment worksΠώς Λειτουργεί η Πληρωμή
Material dug out of the old site is processed into manufactured products and sold. A share of that value goes back to your regional authority as a payment — not a discount, not a rebate, but a direct payment for every tonne recovered.

Total value — genuinely unknown until the site is surveyed. We are not going to guess at it.
That last figure matters. Nobody has publicly measured how much waste is actually buried at Xerolakka. Until a proper survey establishes it, any total we published would be a guess dressed up as a number — so this page shows the rate and stops there.

Xerolakka, outside Patras. About 116 hectares. Took roughly 100,000 tonnes a year and closes when the new plant opens.

Frequently asked questionsΣυχνές Ερωτήσεις
Does anything change about my bins?Αλλάζει κάτι στους κάδους μου;
No. Your collection is handled by the new plant at Floka from 2027. Nothing in this document changes how or when your waste is collected.
Isn't the problem already solved by the new plant?Δεν λύνει το πρόβλημα το νέο εργοστάσιο;
For future waste, yes — and we say so plainly. The new plant is the right answer for what gets collected from now on. What it does not do is deal with the waste already buried at Xerolakka over the past twenty years. That material stays where it is unless someone removes it.
Will my neighbourhood smell different?Θα μυρίζει διαφορετικά η γειτονιά μου;
The old site is the source today, and it closes when the new plant opens either way. Removing buried material reduces what remains to be managed there. The processing facility itself is fully enclosed and airlocked, designed to have almost no smell or discharge.
What does this cost residents?Τι κοστίζει αυτό στους κατοίκους;
Nothing. No new taxes, no municipal charge, no public borrowing. Carbotura pays for the excavation, the facility, and the restoration, and pays the regional authority €50 for every tonne recovered.
Is digging up an old dump safe?Είναι ασφαλής η εκσκαφή ενός παλιού χώρου;
It requires proper engineering, and the site's history is taken seriously — part of it slipped in 2010 and that event was studied and published. Excavation would be planned using exactly that analysis. A full survey of the site comes first, before any commitment is made either way.
Is this just incineration?Είναι απλώς αποτέφρωση;
No. Incineration burns material with oxygen and produces ash and air emissions — the material is destroyed. This process breaks materials apart without burning them, in an oxygen-free chamber, and reforms them into manufactured products: synthetic graphite, graphene compounds, and recovered minerals. Incineration destroys; this manufactures.
Is this definitely going to happen?Θα γίνει σίγουρα;
Not yet, and it would be wrong to suggest otherwise. Everything depends on a survey of what is actually buried at the site — how much, and what condition it is in. Nobody has publicly measured that. If the survey shows it is not workable, Carbotura walks away, and that is written into the arrangement from the start.
Environmental and performance figures are designed targets at commercial scale — they are not guaranteed operational outcomes. The €50 per tonne payment is a standard contract rate, converted from US dollars at a spot rate, and rises 1% a year. No total value is given anywhere on this page because the amount of material buried at Xerolakka has never been publicly measured — a full survey establishes that before any agreement is made, and Carbotura may withdraw on its findings. Job figures are not estimated here, as they depend on the scale of excavation. Site area, intake history and closure plans come from regional environmental studies and public reporting. The 2010 slope movement is documented in peer-reviewed engineering literature. The Floka facility is a separate project that Carbotura is not involved in.
